Crowding describes adjacent teeth that overlap and are not aligned.
What causes crowding?
Often the problem arises when the jaw is not large enough to accommodate all of the teeth, which forces teeth to “shift out of place”. Other culprits can be genetics, history of caries (cavities), tooth size discrepancy, extra teeth just to list a few.
What problems can crowding cause?
Most cavities form between teeth, at or around the contact area between teeth. The lack of good oral hygiene in and around crowded teeth can be a major concern for developing cavities. In addition, problems with the gums (gingivitis) and even the bone and ligaments (periodontitis) holding the tooth in place can be affected with a poor long term outcome.
