    Deep Bite

A deep bite is almost as common as an overbite, therefore it should be addressed to help achieve better function.  A deep bite is when the upper front teeth almost completely overlap the lower front teeth.  Orthodontic treatment options to correct deep bites can be very effective in obtaining ideal function and esthetics.

If a deep bite is left untreated, it may lead to bone loss or gum loss, which can eventually compromise the foundation of the front teeth causing early loss of these teeth.  This can detrimentally affect one’s smile and facial esthetics and can result in decreased self-confidence.

The team at Happy Orthodontics is well experienced and familiar with the best practices for deep bite correction and are available to address your concerns.  The treatment will be customized to best suit your individual bite, and the deep bite will be corrected effectively and efficiently.

    WHAT IS A DEEP BITE?

A deep overbite is when the upper front teeth almost completely overlap the lower front teeth.

    What causes a deep bite?

A deep bite can be caused by a large top jaw, missing lower teeth, a small lower jaw, or tight oral muscular patterns. Please note genetics can play a role in deep bites.

What problems can a deep bite cause?

This can be a very serious issue and a deep bite can lead to unwanted wear of teeth or in more extreme cases the loss of teeth. This condition will also have an impact on facial aesthetics.

The top edges of the lower teeth can actually bite into the gum tissue in the roof of the mouth, potentially stripping the gums from the back of the top teeth which may lead to disrupting the integrity of the teeth.

How do you treat a deep bite problem?

Deep bite treatment may require a multi-discipline approach with orthodontics and restorative dentistry. Orthodontic treatment alone may be able to treat this condition to achieve ideal function and esthetics.

Missing or worn down teeth can create or worsen a ‘deep bite’ situation and in these cases, restoration of the missing or worn down teeth may be needed to re-establish the correct bite. In severe cases, orthognathic surgery may be the best solution.
